Project is a proposal for 16th century apartment building conversion into hotel. Building is one of few baroque architecture examples in Riga. Project is designed to be a contribution to Riga and its inhabitants and guests. In order to improve urban environment and ‘open’ architectural monument to society – inner courtyard is created as an open public outdoor space. While designing new hotel premises, current layout is retained as far as possible by respecting and preserving historical constructive, walls and decorative finishing structure. Building consists of 4 volumes, built in different time periods. Intensive roof architecture, characterized by sloping roofs from hanseatic times, has been destroyed in WW2. In this project renewal of historical roof architecture is proposed. Traditional sloping roof is supplemented with contemporary elements – horizontal shutters – to provide daylight in attic level spaces.
